Volunteers Needed to Assist 1st Graders With Math

Audubon is looking for four parent or community volunteers who would like to work with a small group of FIRST graders (4-5 students) on math once/week for approx 50 minutes, starting immediately. The weekly sessions would be on Thursdays from 11:15 – 11:45am (room 107) and 12:55 – 1:25pm (room 104). This program is aimed at improving the differentiation of math instruction for first graders. Specific activities/curriculum and one 1-hr training session will be provided prior to start. This commitment would begin sometime in February and run through the remainder of the school year.

This is the same program, led by math differentiation specialist Julia Sajovec, that has already been started in the second and third grades, and now we’re ready to apply it to the first grade. With success, other grades will follow. Parents of first graders are not eligible to volunteer in this capacity in their own child’s classroom, but CAN help out in the other first grade class. For parents with younger students (kindergarten or preschool age), this is a great way to get a glimpse into the future! Email kurfam4@comcast.net, if interested. Questions? Email Audubon Math Specialist jazver@cps.edu.
